Committee Members

The Lake Erie Region Source Protection Committee has 24 members representing different sectors.

Steve Walsh is the Chair of the Committee appointed by the Province on May 27, 2024.

Committee members

There are 24 members on our committee:

  • Seven municipal representatives;
  • Seven economic sector representatives, including three from business and industry, three from agriculture and one from the aggregate industry;
  • Seven public interest representatives; and
  • Three First Nations representatives. 

A short biography for each of the current members is outlined below.

A complete list of all past and present members is also available as a record of everyone who has contributed to the committee since it formed in 2007.

Steve Walsh is the Chair of the Lake Erie Region Source Protection Committee.

Steve was a member of the OPP for 34 years starting his career in Walkerton. In 1995, he began farming in Mount Forrest as a member of the Wellington Federation of Agriculture. Now retired, he resides on a small farm in Elgin County, where he is the Vice President of the Elgin Federation of Agriculture (EFA). Steve has represented the EFA on Elgin Clean Water since its inception in 2012, approving funding for environmental stewardship projects including wetland creation, erosion control and well decommissioning. Steve is also the current Chair of ALUS Elgin and serves as a member of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Grant Review Team – Thames Valley.

  • Emily Stahl (City of Guelph) is the Manager of Technical Services in the City of Guelph's Water Utility. Emily is a Professional Geoscientist with a master's degree in water resources engineering and has significant government and private consulting-based experience in integrated water management, water resource planning, source water protection and associated technical studies and stakeholder engagement processes.
  • Geoff Moroz (Region of Waterloo) is the Manager of Hydrogeology and Source Water Programs for the Region of Waterloo. 
  • Paul Emerson (Brant, Brantford and Hamilton) is the Board Chair of the Brant Community Healthcare System and the former CAO of the Grand River Conservation Authority and the County of Brant.
  • Linda Vandendriessche (Norfolk and Haldimand) is currently a Councillor for Norfolk County.
  • Alex Piggott (Elgin, St. Thomas, London and Middlesex) is the Manager of Development and Compliance for the Municipality of Central Elgin. 
  • John Sepulis (Grey, Dufferin, Halton and Wellington) is currently a Councillor for the Township of Puslinch and a retired professional engineer from the public sector. For the past few years he has served as Chair of the Township's Planning Development Advisory Committee as well as Chair of the Committee of Adjustment. 
  • Matthew Jauernig (Oxford and Perth) is the Coordinator of Source Protection Program for Oxford County. He gained his degree in Environmental Engineering and previously worked in consulting as an environmental consultant, specializing in soil and groundwater investigations and remediation.   

  • Ian Macdonald (business and industry) is a geoscientist and has 22 years of experience in groundwater supply, contaminant hydrogeology, environmental auditing, environmental management systems and waste management. He is a Senior Hydrogeologist / Auditor at BluMetric Environmental.
  • Brian Whitwell (agriculture) is a farmer from Haldimand County, breeding and selling Purebred Black Angus cattle nationally and internationally. He was born and raised on a mixed farm in the late 1950's and later attended Mohawk College before purchasing his farm in Haldimand County in the mid 1980's.
  • Ken Hunsberger (agriculture) is a farmer from Baden, Region of Waterloo. He has served on committees dealing with water quality and source water protection in the Region of Waterloo.
  • George Schneider (aggregate) is a principal at Golder Associates, an environmental and engineering consulting company. He has worked on projects in aggregates, water supply, source water protection, contaminated sites and mining. 
  • Larry Davis (agriculture) is an Ontario Federation of Agriculture Provincial Director and a multigenerational farmer. He has worked on many environmental committees, including the Rural Water Quality Program, has been recognized by the Ontario government for innovative water conservation practices, and is a member of the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association. 

Lake Erie Region is currently in the process of recruiting two business and industry representatives to fill current vacancies. 

  • Alan Dale is from Norwich Township and farms and works in the agri-food industry. He was a member of Township Council and sat on the Grand River Conservation Authority board for 10 years, serving a Vice-chair and Chair, and was also Chair of the Upper Thames Conservation Authority board. He served as Acting Chair of the Source Protection Committee from September 2022-May 2024 and has also chaired the Implementation Working Group.
  • Linda Dickson has lived in Woolwich Township for 20 years and the Region of Waterloo for 30 years. She has worked for the County of Wellington for the past 33 years as a Land Use Planner and as an Emergency Manager, and has served on various Woolwich Township Committees. She is the current Chair of the Implementation Working Group. 
  • Nancy Goucher was born and raised in Kitchener and has a master's degree in Planning. She has worked in the water sector for 17 years, including shaping water policy discussions across Canada and holding positions with Environmental Defence, Freshwater Future and the Forum for Leadership on Water. As the current Knowledge Mobilization Specialist at the University of Waterloo's Water Institute, she works to support the rapid implementation of new knowledge in water management, focusing on knowledge transfer, strategic partnerships, and fostering collaboration between researchers and end-users.  
  • Andrew Henry is the Division Manager, regional water supply for the Lake Huron and Elgin Area Primary Water Supply Systems. He has been involved in many provincial plans related to municipal water operations, water protection and emergency management.
  • Phil Wilson is the Manager of Water and Wastewater Engineering for Haldimand County.  
  • Amy Domaratzki is a resident of Waterloo and a hydrogeologist with 25 years of experience in the public and private sectors. She was formerly the Risk Management Official for the Region of Waterloo.
  • Chris Gerrits has 20 years of experience as a professional engineer working in the field of hydrogeology and is the current mayor of the Township of Amaranth. He is also a participating member on neighbouring Source Protection Committees.

  • Fawn Sault represents the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and is a member of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation Band Council.

  • Lauren Jones represents Six Nations of the Grand River and is the Six Nations Wildlife and Stewardship Manager.

Six Nations of the Grand River is currently in the process of determining a new representative to replace Nathan Wright.
